Let me ask you, how often are you grabbing a newspaper or magazine and searching for support in your business? If you are anything like me, chances are you haven’t touched a magazine in YEARS, except to throw away the junk mail that’s filling up my mailbox.

If you want to get in front of your ideal audience, you need to start being intentional with your social media. But how?

Woman's hands holding a cell phone, looking at pop ups of social media interactions. Text reads, "tips to help you slay your social media."

I recently had the honor to speak to an incredible, exclusive group of Tech VA’s and found that most of them feel so overwhelmed by the thought of marketing themselves and their businesses on social media. These women have no problem learning completely new platforms and coding high-end websites for their clients, but figuring out what to say on social media has them stumped.

What I’ve found over the past three years as a Copywriter is that this is how SO MANY people feel. I promise you, it does not have to be as scary as you are making it out to be.

To help, I wanted to share a few important takeaways with you from the call to show you how to “slay your social media!”

It’s Okay to Suck

Fear of imperfection can hold us back from putting ourselves and our businesses out there. I’ve met so many Business Owners who had families that didn’t even know what they actually did because they never “came out” of the entrepreneur closet. If you want to build your business, you have to share your business.

Yes, I understand that your first Instagram story, Live Video, Reel, or blog might be absolutely terrible. THAT’S OKAY! It’s actually expected. But the truth is, you’re still reaching more people than you would’ve if you didn’t even try! Embrace being a beginner! The only way you can go is forward.

Show Your Face

People want to know that there is a real live person behind the brand. If you were to stop and take a few minutes to scroll through the accounts you follow on Instagram, what would it look like? Are you following mostly big brands – or influencers? By sharing who you are, you are sharing the driving force behind your business. If you’re trying to create an aesthetically pleasing feed, there is nothing wrong with using stock photos but make sure you are balancing it out with pieces of YOU! Again, that means showing up and putting yourself out there with content like IG Reels, Stories, FB Lives, or even TikToks!

Get Social!

After all, that’s what these platforms are all about right? Connecting with new people and building relationships is how you will build a strong foundation for your business. Be sure to engage with your followers and reply to comments and messages in a timely manner. If you get new followers, don’t be scared to send them a quick message thanking them for following you and asking them how they found you or what made them follow you in the first place. The worst that can happen is they don’t reply. It’s also important that you go through your brand hashtags to connect with others in your audience or industry!

Speaking of Hashtags…

Use Them! Now, the guidelines for hashtags may be different on each platform, but I don’t see hashtags going out of style any time soon. If you are mainly building your business through Instagram, using relevant hashtags on your post will give you a little boost and help you to extend your reach!
